White Ally Toolkit Training: Part 1

Dr. David Campt is a national leader who has been creating racial equity dialogue for more than two decades. His clients have included the White House, social justice organizations, members of congress, the foundation community, labor unions, corporations, universities, and non-profit organizations. In the summer of 2016, his attention turned toward translating his expertise about racial dialogue toward giving practical guidance to white allies. His trainings focus on equipping white allies to do the vital conversational work with other whites that is sorely needed so that racial equity efforts will be successful. Since its founding, the White Ally Toolkit (WAT) has touched thousands of people in person and online, and represents an important innovation in the struggle for racial equity.

Over the past several years, Dr. David Campt has developed the White Ally Toolkit training to teach allies how to foster constructive debiasing dialogues with the racism skeptics within their spheres of influence.
As Dr. Campt explains:

“If anti-racism allies are going to change any minds, empathetic listening will likely be important. But, the anti-racism movement should not expect [people of color (POC)] to empathetically listen to white racism skeptics. White people are in a much better position to execute listening-based strategy with people who are skeptical about whether racism is real. On a daily basis, POCs must endure the indirect expression of white skepticism that racism really matters, and they must do so as they are experiencing overt and subtle racism and dignity violations in many parts of their lives. Some people of color might choose to have conversations when white people’s racial skepticism is consciously expressed. But it would not be fair and just to expect people of color to endure this. The White Ally Toolkit focuses specifically on helping white folks have more effective encounters with white friends, co-workers, and family who are skeptical that racism is a problem.”

Using current research on persuasion, the White Ally Toolkit teaches trainees concrete skills for using their own racial background as a tool to advance racial equity. We’re working with Dr. Campt to reduce the 55% of white people who are racism skeptics.

At Peacebuilding, we believe racism breeds dignity violations and structural trauma that we need to talk about and transform into nonviolent power. And, as Dr. Campt says, there is no reason we can’t enjoy ourselves together while we learn engaging strategies to change our communities for good.

WAT training objectives:

  1. Learn the background and necessity of the White Ally Toolkit's RACE (Reflect, Ask, Connect, Expand) Method.
  2. Learn the RACE Method for talking to a racism skeptic.
  3. Practice the RACE Method for being with and talking to a racism skeptic.

The White Ally Toolkit Training: Part 1 has been approved by the Minnesota Professional Boards for Continued Education (CE) credit for social workers, teachers, and nurses.

CE Certificates for 3 hours of continuing education credit will be provided for $25/trainee.

Please note that it is still necessary to register on the training webpage if you are purchasing CEs/CLEs.
